The Sailing Boathouse is available for experienced sailors during recreational sailing hours by purchasing a Boston University Sailing Card.  The Sailing Card is valid for one academic year or the summer session.  Sailing Cards can be purchased at the Department of Physical Education, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

Recreational Sailing Hours

Academic Year (September/October and April/May)
      Monday through Friday, 1-5 p.m.
      Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m - 5 p.m.

Summer 2008 Hours (May 27-August 17)
Tuesday-Sunday, 11 a.m.- 7 p.m.
Facilities are closed Memorial Day Weekend, May 24-26 and Independence Day, July 4.

The Boston University Sailing Pavilion is located under the Boston University Bridge on the Boston side of the Charles River. To get there, take the Marsh Chapel Footbridge, located near the BU Beach, to the Esplanade. Turn left and walk toward the BU Bridge.

Fees and Eligibility

Purchase of a Sailing Card and successful completion of the Boating Swim Test is required.

Pay the Sailing Card Fees at the Department of Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance, 915 Commonwealth Ave.

All others $90
Guest fee (Guest must be accompanied by a Boston University Recreational Sailing Card holder) $10


BU Boating Swim Test

Only the Boston University Boating Swim Test administered by a lifeguard at the Fitrec pool is accepted to register for a boating class. The swim test may be taken during any recreational swim. Call 358-3740 for pool hours.

Present a picture ID to a BU Lifeguard and perform the following:

  • 1. Jump or dive into the deep end;
  • 2. Swim for a length of 15 feet underwater;
  • 3. Demonstrate rhythmic breathing (crawl stroke or breast stroke) continuously for four lengths of the pool (100 yards);
  • 4. Tread water for two minutes;
  • 5. Survival float face-down (taking breaths) for one minute.

Each skill must be performed for the entire time/distance without stopping.
