Eligibility

All players must be current Boston University students with a Terrier Card or faculty/staff who hold a valid FitRec Center Membership.  Alumni are not allowed to participate in spring and fall programs.

Players may be added to the team roster anytime before the last regular season game.  New players must fill out a roster addition in the PERD Office or with the Intramural Supervisor prior to their first game.  To be eligible for playoffs, players must participate in at least one regular season game.

A player may play for only one team from each of the following leagues: men's/women's, or co-rec.  Any player having played one or more games for a particular team may not play for any other team in that season.

A team found using ineligible players may be ineligible for further play during that season.  It is the team captain's responsibility to determine the eligibility of his/her players.

Club sport team members may participate in their corresponding Intramural sports (i.e. baseball = softball, volleyball, women's ice hockey).  A maximum of two club sport members are allowed on any one Intramural team for the corresponding sport.

Former varsity athletes must sit out one season before being eligible to participate in their corresponding sport.  Any member of a varsity team who remains with the team beyond the team's first contest of the season will be ineligible.

A maximum of two intramural staff members directly involved in a sport may play on the same team in that sport (i.e. only two outdoor soccer officials may play on the same outdoor soccer team).

Intentional eligibility violations are very serious.  Violators may lose their privilege of participating in intramural sports.

Free Agents

If you cannot find enough people to make a team, take a chance by becoming a "free agent."  Just show up at the captain's meeting and an announcement will be made that individuals are looking for a team.  If you can't make the captain's meeting, but still want to be a free agent, contact Chris Daigle or Tracey Dultz.

Forfeits

Forfeits are detrimental to the program and to your team's participation.  Team captains are responsible for making sure their teams play as scheduled.  Captains are urged to notify the Department of Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance if their team is unable to make a scheduled game.   Notification must be made at least three working days prior to the scheduled game.  Efforts will be made by the league coordinator to reschedule the game, however, this does not guarantee games can be rescheduled. Failure to play at a scheduled game time will result in a forfeit and a $10 forfeit fee will be charged.  A team will be dropped from the league unless this fee is paid within two working days of the forfeited game.  All forfeit fees must be paid to the Department of Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance located at 915 Comm. Ave. on the second floor.  Make checks payable to Boston University.  Two (2) forfeits will lead to automatic dismissal from the league.

Sportsmanship

The Code of Student Responsibilities presupposes that there will be civility and respect for others within the University community at all times.  Students violating the Code are subject to disciplinary action by the Office of Judicial Affairs.  Any verbal or physical abuse to another person is inappropriate and will not be tolerated.  The Intramural Supervisor will deal with any players, captains, or spectators who violate good sportsmanship.  Disciplinary action may include ejection from the game, forfeiting the game, suspension from Intramural activities, and if necessary, further disciplinary action.

Teams need to be aware that there is a sportsmanship evaluation system in place throughout all Intramural activities.   The Graduate Assistant, supervisors, and officials evaluates the sportsmanship of teams based upon fair play, attitude, language, "trash talking," and overall demeanor toward opponents and Intramural Officials. Evaluations begin the moment a player, coach and/or fan enters the playing arena and concludes when they make their final exit after their game.  These evaluations are also based on the conduct of a team's fans.  The rating system ranges from 0 (meaning totally unacceptable), to 4 (meaning excellent conduct and sportsmanship). In order for teams to make the playoffs, teams are required to maintain a minimum average of 3.0 (meaning average conduct and sportsmanship).   Specific policies and procedures will be handed out and explained at the team captains meeting.  Intramural Officials and Supervisors are students who are providing an important service for Intramural participants.  Anyone who verbally or physically accosts an Intramural Official or Supervisor will be immediately and automatically suspended.

Ejected Players

Players ejected from any Intramural contest are considered as being ineligible to participate in any other Intramural contest until they have been reinstated by meeting with a specified staff member concerning the incident leading to their ejection.  For example: if a player is ejected from a flag football game they may not participate in flag football, basketball, floor hockey, softball, volleyball, etc. until they have been reinstated.  Ejected players participating without having been reinstated subject their team to forfeit any game in which they have participated.   Coaches and/or captains are responsible for making sure that all members of their team are eligible.

Participant Safety

Intramural programs offer individuals the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities at selected skill levels.   Generally, contests for each team are held once a week for the duration of one hour.  There have been few complications due to involvement in intramural programs, but the possibility exists for encountering problems related to exertion and physical activity such as (but not all-inclusive) muscle strain, bone fractures, lightheadedness, heart attacks and strokes.  It is recommended that each participant have a physical exam by a physician prior to participation in any type of exercise program, and that participants be in appropriate physical condition for their selected activity.  Furthermore, participants are required to abide by eligibility guidelines and the game rules of their sport for their own protection.   Each Intramural participant enters the Intramural program willingly and at their own risk.
