This class is Step Aerobics set to water without the stressful impact on your joints! Through the use of weighted aqua steps, exercises are performed on and off the platform in shallow water. All levels welcome; individuals determine intensity.

Done in warm shallow water, this therapeutic class will assist with injuries, arthritis and stiff joints. Through slow repetitive movements it is possible to strengthen and stretch muscles without undue stress on the joint or injury. Great for improving limited mobility. Will take place in recreation pool (0-depth ramp with wheelchair access).

The supportive environment of warm water unites with the discipline of yoga. Exercises originally done while lying on the back or in kneeling or sitting positions are adapted to water. Breathing techniques are emphasized. A great workout and stress reliever in one class!

Hot Aqua Yoga

This class will incorporate the spa pool which is heated to 102 degrees to gain some of the advantages associated with "hot" yoga. The techniques acquired will facilitate the power inherent in movement which is initiated and maintained throughout the core body rather than the extremities. We will also work on attaining greater mobility throughout the thoracic spine. Come and unlock the unused potential in your hips and, at the same time have a great time hanging out at the hot tub! (Those with heart disease, diabetes, history of stroke, high or low blood pressure or are pregnant should consult a physician before participating.)

Lifeguard Instructor

Prerequisites: Instructor candidates must be at least 17 years old and pass the precourse session that includes a written exam and skill assessment for Lifeguard Training, First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. (With successful completion of the precourse, candidates will renew their Lifeguard Training certifications during the testing.) A $50 fee will be retained from those who do not pass the precourse session and can not continue in the LGI course. The coursework prepares instructor candidates to teach the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course and includes first aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, Oxygen Administration, and Preventing Disease Transmission. Those who anticipate needing more practice with the new Lifeguard Training and CPR/AED skills are encouraged to enroll in the Lifeguard Training Review course. Students must have their own resuscitation mask and Lifeguarding textbook (the instructor manual will be supplied and is included in the cost of the course).

Learn the Olympic sport that requires tremendous athleticism, technique, and grace. Participants should have strong swimming skills to enroll and must pass a prerequisite swimming test. Swim test will be administered on the first day of class.

Pre-req: Ability to tread water for 10 minutes and swim 50 yards head-up freestyle. For those who have completed the intro class or have experience playing polo. Learn defensive and offensive plays through drills while increasing strength and endurance in the water. This is a great opportunity to play matches with men and women and improve your game. Fundamental Aquatic Skills – Builds on the fundamental skills from level 1. Students learn to float and recover without support and explore swimming on the front and back. This level marks the beginning of true locomotion skills. Can do some skills unsupported, even if for only a few seconds. Can submerge mouth, nose and eyes and blow bubbles and is comfortable doing so.

Can swim on front and back unsupported for at least 15 feet with alternating arm action and continuous kicking. Can float and glide unsupported and bob fully submerged at least 5 times continuously.

Stroke Improvement – Develops confidence, coordination and strength in front crawl and back crawl. Continue to build on butterfly and diving skills. Breaststroke, sidestroke and elementary backstroke are introduced. Can swim front crawl at least 15 yards, back crawl 15 yards and butterfly kick at least 15 feet. Can do a kneeling dive and tread water for at least 30 seconds.

Divers should meet the minimum dive requirements for FINA competition in their age group, and/or have the approval of the instructor. Training will reinforce the fundamentals of diving (strength and flexibility, boardwork, posture, body alignment, dive initiation mechanics and entry techniques), while focusing on learning new dives and meet preparation. Ages 8-19 and interested collegiate divers.

This class provides non-members and non-affiliates an opportunity to use the Barreca Climbing Wall located within the Fitness and Recreation Center, at certain times. The class would provide access to the climbing wall Monday through Thursday and Saturday from 12p – 2p, and Sunday from 4:30p – 7:30p. No instruction will be provided with the class. The class only allows access to the Climbing Wall, not the rest of the facility.

Prereq: Advanced Cardiac Life Support. This 8-hour course is designed for ACLS providers who wish to renew their provider status. ACLS emphasizes the importance of basic life support CPR to patient survival, the integration of effective basic life support with advanced cardiovascular life support interventions and the importance of effective team interaction and communication during resuscitation. Realistic simulations reinforce the following key concepts: proficiency in basic life support care, recognizing and initiating early management of peri-arrest conditions, managing cardiac arrest, identifying and treating ischemic chest pain and acute coronary syndromes, recognizing other life-threatening clinical situations (such as stroke) and providing initial care, ACLS algorithms, and effective resuscitation team dynamics. Students who pass course requirements earn a two year re-certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support.

Advanced Airway Techniques for the EMT-B

This class will teach students how to maintain an open airway using advanced techniques such as the Esophageal Tracheal Combitube (ETC), Pharyngeotracheal Lumen Airway (PtL), Laryngeal Mask Airway (LMA), and Endtotracheal Intubation. Students will have supervised practice on airway manikins as well as lecture time to review each device.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

Prereq: CPR for the Professional Rescuer. This 16 hour course is designed for healthcare providers who either direct or participate in the resuscitation of a patient, whether in or out of hospital. ACLS emphasizes the importance of basic life support CPR to patient survival, the integration of effective basic life support with advanced cardiovascular life support interventions and the importance of effective team interaction and communication during resuscitation. Realistic simulations reinforce the following key concepts: proficiency in basic life support care, recognizing and initiating early management of peri-arrest conditions, managing cardiac arrest, identifying and treating ischemic chest pain and acute coronary syndromes, recognizing other life-threatening clinical situations (such as stroke) and providing initial care, ACLS algorithms, and effective resuscitation team dynamics. Students who pass course requirements earn a two year certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support. Class fee includes required text and materials. 0.5 cr, either sem.

Prerequisite: Intermediate First Aid. This six-hour advanced First Aid Course increases the rescuers knowledge of first aid and emergency care. This American Heart Association course is a 6 hour program designed to give students the opportunity to learn, practice and demonstrate many airway skills used in resuscitation. Healthcare providers whose occupation or volunteer activities require airway management skills, in addition to professionals in the field of resuscitation and airway management such as scientists, educators, researchers, and manufacturers of medical devices will find the course beneficial. The learning model for this course includes video-guided instruction, skills practice, and testing in bag-mask ventilation and airway adjuncts, laryngeal mask airway, esophageal-tracheal combitube, endotracheal tube, and impedance threshold devices. This course does not provide certification, but instead is designed solely to enhance students' airway management skills. Class fee includes required text.

Drug & Alcohol Overdose

In urban areas such as Boston, the prevalence of drug and alcohol overdose is higher than that encountered in other more rural areas. A more in-depth understanding of the pharmacological actions of particular drugs on the human body gives the EMS provider the ability to distinguish between overdoses of various drug classes. This course will provide an overview of the physiological effects of drug overdose, with a particular emphasis on clinical presentation. Drug classifications that will be discussed include illicit street drugs, club drugs, and commonly abused substances such as inhalants and alcohol. Patient scenarios will provide practice in recognizing the appropriate assessment skills and patient care.
